Keerthivassan enters final; All-Maharashtra clash in women’s summit clash

Qualifier Keerthivassan Suresh overcame a stiff resistance from Madhwin Kamath for a 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4 victory in the men’s semifinals of the Fenesta National Tennis Championship at the DLTA Complex.

Even as it was a delightful treat for the bunch of fans at the arena, it was a thorough test of character, fitness and competitive zeal of the two players, in a contest that went beyond the four-hour mark.

The 20-year-old Keerthivassan was able to fight back from every tense situation to assert his strong game and stout heart, much against the general perception of his wiry frame.

Keerthivassan Suresh fought for more than four hours to reach the men’s final of the National Tennis Championship in Delhi on Friday.

Keerthivassan will challenge the former champion Manish Sureshkumar, who recovered from losing the first set in a hurry, to outplay Ishaque Eqbal.

Apart from being from Tamil Nadu, the two are connected by their coach Sureshkumar Sonachalam who trains them with diligence in Chennai.

In the women’s section, Akanksha Nitture overcame the loss of the first set against Jennifer Luikham to turn the match around with aplomb. She went on to win two doubles matches later in the day to be crowned the champion with Soha Sadiq.

Top seed Vaishnavi Adkar had proved too hot for Soha earlier in the day as she raced to the singles final for the loss of one game. It will be an all-Maharashtra affair.

The results:

Men (semifinals): Manish Sureshkumar bt Ishaque Eqbal 1-6, 6-1, 6-1; Keerthivassan Suresh bt Madhwin Kamath 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4.

Women (semifinals): Vaishnavi Adkar bt Soha Sadiq 6-1, 6-0; Akanksha Nitture bt Jennifer Luikham 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Doubles (final): Akanksha Nitture & Soha Sadiq bt Pooja Ingale & Yubrani Banerjee 6-2, 6-2.

Under-18 boys (semifinals): Hruthik Katakam 7-6(7), 0-6, 6-1; Tavish Pahwa bt Gandharv Gourav 6-2, 6-2.

Doubles (final): Vraj Gohil & Prakaash Sarran bt Karan Thapa & Channa Mallikarjuna Yale 2-6, 7-5, (10-5).

Under-18 girls (semifinals): Snigdha Kanta bt Shreeniti Chowdhury 7-6(0), 6-0; Harshini Nagaraj bt Parthsarthi Mundhe 6-3, 6-3.

Bhullar rises to second in rain-hit Jakarta International Championships

Indian golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar fired a brilliant five-under 65 in the opening round and followed it up with another impressive 65 on day two to climb to second place at the rain-affected Jakarta International Championship here on Friday.

Bhullar sits just one shot behind Thailand’s Pavit Tangkamolprasert (64-65) even though the second round is yet to be completed.

The 37-year-old started with an eagle on the first hole of the first round but was unable to complete his first round as darkness fell. He came back on the second morning and finished his round before proceeding to touch double digits 10-under.

Bhullar has five wins in Indonesia from his total of 11 on the Asian Tour. He is now looking for a sixth success in the country.

The second-best Indian, after Bhullar, was S. Chikkarangappa (69-67), who showed that he is slowly getting back to form. He was currently T-26th.

Rahil Gangjee, who carded a bogey-free 4-under 66 to be placed at T-16 after Day 1, was one over at the 8th hole in the second round. Khalin Joshi and Viraj Madappa carded 2-under 68 in the opening round. Karandeep Kochhar and Ajeetesh Sandhu had shot rounds of even par to be placed at T-83 after day 1.

SSP Chawrasia and Yuvraj Sandhu played rounds of 1-over 71 to place themselves at T-98. Rashid Khan shot 3-over 73 (T-135) and Shiv Kapur shot 4-over 74 (T-138) after round 1.

Anna Huang targets historic hat-trick at Hero Women’s Indian Open

Sixteen-year-old Canadian prodigy Anna Huang, one of the brightest rising stars on the Ladies European Tour (LET), will be aiming to script history at the Hero Women’s Indian Open 2025, as she chases a rare hat-trick of titles on the Tour.

Having triumphed in her last two starts — in Spain and France — Huang now eyes a third consecutive victory at the DLF Golf and Country Club, Gurugram, from October 9-12.

A win in India would place her in elite company, alongside France’s Marie-Laure de Lorenzi (1989) and Denmark’s Emily Kristine Pedersen (2020), as only the third player to achieve a three-peat on the LET.

Rayhan Thomas off to a fine start with 64 in Korn Ferry

Indian-origin golfer Rayhan Thomas was off to a splendid start at the Compliance Solutions Championship, shooting 7-under 64 to be Tied-16th in the penultimate event of the Korn Ferry Tour, where leader Davis Chatfield shot a sub-60 total of 12-under 59.

Indo-Canadian Sudarshan Yellamaraju carded 6-under 65 at The Patriot Golf Club and is now placed T-24.

Thomas had nine birdies against two bogeys in the first round. He started the day on the back nine with a birdie and went on to make six more birdies on the back nine.

Thomas, who birdied from the sixth to the ninth, added another one on the 10th to make it five in a row. A bogey on the second and the eighth with birdies in between on the fourth and the sixth, saw him get 64.

Yellamaraju began his first round on the back nine and played a bogey free first round that included four birdies and one eagle.

Three consecutive birdies on the 14th, 15th and 16th holes along with a birdie on the fifth and the eagle on the first hole saw him card six under for the day.

Thomas started this week placed 106 on the Korn Ferry points list and will be looking to use the strong start to the week to break into the top 100 and earn a conditional status on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Yellamaraju is currently placed 18th on the same list and would aim for a strong finish this week to stay within the top 20 and secure his card to the PGA Tour.

Slow start for Akshay Bhatia, four-way lead at Sanderson

Akshay Bhatia had a disappointing start to the 2025 Sanderson Farms Championship as he was placed tied for 88th after shooting an even par card on the opening day tournament.

Bhatia, entering as the betting favourite, bogeyed the seventh and the eighth and turned in 2-over. Birdies on the 10th, 12th and the 13th saw him get under par but bogeys on the 14th and 16th dashed his hopes despite a birdie in between on the 15th.

He needs a fast start on the second day to move up the leader board and stay in the tournament.

Tough start for Shubhankar Sharma at Dunhill Links

Indian golfer Shubhankar Sharma carded four birdies in his first five holes, but faded away after that as he managed only two pars and two bogeys for a 4-under 68 that placed him T-76 after the first round at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Sharma birdied the first and then had three more from the third to the fifth. Thereafter, he cooled off with a bogey on the seventh. He did birdie again on the ninth and the 10th, but once again dropped a shot on the 12th and parred the remaining six holes at the Kingsbarns course.

His next two rounds will be at the St Andrews and Carnoustie.

Sharma will need a low score to end his run of 16 missed cuts since Hero Indian open in March this year. Overall, he has missed 20 cuts in 24 starts in 2025.
